Preparing the Lawn for Winter
Winter is a difficult time in the life of the lawn, especially if it is planted the first year. If in spring you don’t want to see a pitiful sight of ragged plot with numerous bare patches and abundance of weeds, it is necessary to carry out regular, planned maintenance of the lawn during the growing season.
Fall lawn fertilization
The autumn lawn fertilization with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are usually held in September. When using the finished structure, reduce by one-third the indicated dose of the fertilizer, and after feeding you should spill the lawn so that the highly soluble granules dissolved and there wasn’t a chemical burn of plants.
By the beginning of September, you should cut the lawn once every 12-15 days, cropping and leaving only the tips of the grass as mulch. The last cut is usually made in early October to a height of 7-8 cm, and if the weather is dry and sunny, then in a couple of weeks you can cut the tips of the grass to a height of 9-10 cm.
When the daily average temperature is at around 10 ° C, the lawn mowing must be stopped. Before the frosts you can hide the lawn areas (not too large) with a thin layer (2-3 cm) of dry peat to prevent the moisture.
Lawn in winter
After the snowfall it is better not to walk on the lawn, you must not throw snow on it, because it can lead to trampling of the lawn. All of these issues are relevant especially to the lawn at the first year of life. If an ice crust is formed on the surface of the snow, then it should be split, and the high packed snowdrifts should be pierced with stakes to prevent access of air.
The desire to have a good lawn is inseparable from the hassle of maintenance, you should remember this.
