Daffodils and Daylilies Collaboration

Twenty years ago, the staff at the New York Botanical Garden dug borders along either side of a curving walk and filled them, cheek by jowl, with several hundred Daffodils and Daylilies. The result was (and remains) a garden that explodes with color in early spring, then mounts an exuberant midsummer display that continues into September. This elegant and efficient scheme requires practically no maintenance, for Daffodils and Daylilies are certainly the most reliable, most carefree, and longest-lived perennials known to man, and they thrive in identical conditions.

If you already enjoy a large planting of Daffodils or Daylilies, it’s easy to turn it into your own collaboration by adding the missing element. Inserting Daffodils among Daylilies presents no problem. Adding Daylilies to Daffodils gone dormant requires that you fly blind. You may disturb a few bulbs in the process, but they’re likely to bounce back the next year and the setback will scarcely be noticed.
