Winter Warm-Up

Like fashion and your wardrobe, your home and décor can use a seasonal update. Why not make over your home’s “wardrobe”?
Here are five get-cozy trends, according to the trend-trackers at The Home Depot, which will have you warming up to winter.
Trend #1: Luxurious Fabrics

Velvet, silk and leather furnishings add an instant update to your look. Try adding a velvet-tufted ottoman or a leather recliner for extra seating with a luxe twist. Replace any lightweight, gauzy drapery with richer window treatments, such as SHF’s silky taffeta, embroidered and crushed-velvet drapery styles. It will give a “dressed” feeling to your home.
Trend #2: Hot Color
Add something unexpected: a new, graphic piece of artwork or an oriental-style area rug can give the whole room a shot of brightness and add colors to use in décor touches like throw pillows. Wallpaper makes a comeback, in easier-to-apply formats. Look for botanical prints, stylized stripes and tone-on-tone textures to add dimension and color to your walls. And don’t forget paint. It’s the easiest and most popular way to update a wall, a room or a whole house.
Trend #3: Gold Details
Gold details
The simple addition of a gilt-framed mirror, changing the hardware on living and dining room cabinetry to gold, or hanging champagne-toned drapery from golden curtain rods and finials add polish. Or try spray-painting the legs of a decorative side table a matte gold as a weekend project. You can also add a high-gloss finish to a drab fireplace by tiling over its frame with a mosaic of golden-hued tiles.
Trend #4: Outdoors In
Outdoors décor elements are here to stay. Try an indoor water feature for a calming sound, hang a mesh canopy over a bed to give a safari feeling to a bedroom or paint a room in nature-inspired colors such as crisp green, aqua or sky blue. Terra cotta is a warmer, earthier alternative and one of the hottest color trends right now. And you can even grill indoors. Install a cooktop with a built-in grill, such as Jenn Air’s Designer Line Modular Electric Downdraft cooktop, or just plug in DeLonghi’s portable grill, and dinner is served.
Trend #5: Add Warmth
An extra table or floor lamp powered by a soft-glow and eco-friendly compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) is always a smart choice. A fireplace, in just-plug-it-in electric or the clean-burning gel-fuel varieties, will finish your living, family or recreation room and provide a focal point for the space. If you’re considering new flooring, install radiant under-floor heating, such as Honeywell’s electric floor-warming system, before laying tile, stone, vinyl and even laminate flooring. Not only will it feel warm underfoot in a kitchen and add a spa-like feel to a bathroom but come the cold days of winter, it will take the chill out of such colder rooms like the basement rec room. Your feet will thank you.
