New Tendency: Wood Era
Exhibitions in Paris and Cologne, showed that the designers really took a great interest in working with wood. This phenomenon is not new: in the light of the universal desire to be closer to nature, fashion used for the manufacture of furniture parts of the tree in their pristine beauty was evident in the past year. However, it now has a broader scope: almost unhewn stumps filled halls pavilions; tree is less subjected to processing, the structure of a tree, its heterogeneity of the surface is not hidden, but rather put up for show.
Certainly, among the many of the same “stumps” are interesting and representatives of the designer lines that show the natural beauty of wood and the justification for this approach to the material. At the imm cologne exhibition, a table Briccole Venezia from the old wood piles, by custom-design of Matteo Thun was shown. Cut off from the post of board, it serves as countertops, which is supported by fixed legs at different angles. Desk is part of a larger project Milanese company RIVA 1920, which invited 18 designers and architects with the desire to create furniture from old oak posts from Venetian canals.
Stand lamp Love, created by Czech designer Klára Šumová, consists of a paper shade and wooden base, carved from a tree. According to the designer, her lamp is to show the evolution of wood – wood from the bottom up unhewn paper lampshade on top.
Some designers are showing more refined approach to the wood. French designer Suzanne Rippe showed at the exhibition Maison & Objet series of wooden objects, known as Bloc collection. Suzanne gives new life to old beams and timbers, turning them into completely different objects like sculptures, stools, side tables. The method of Suzanne is that she fills the cracks and splits wood mosaic, or, as the designer says, she turns the tree into stone. Every object is unique, as the nature itself dictates the pattern and nature of the decoration.
