Stay Ok At Hostel Stayokay From Edward van Vliet
The global financial crisis has caused many scale projects. The hotel business is no exception. Instead of a frozen stage on the construction of five-star hotels, budgetary hotels of a new standard are opened everywhere, known as designer hostels that have little resemblance to the usual student campus.
Such an institution is located inside the famous “Dutch cubes” in the historic district of Rotterdam Oude Haven. The unusual building was designed by Piet Blom in 1984: over the pedestrian bridge across the river, he overbuilt 38 cubic volumes, placing them on the edge (this building is as an example of structuralism in architecture included in the Revue 10-10 – annex April’s Interni). Instead of cubes three-storey flats were standing there before: now the largest youth hostel rooms of Holland social Hotel Stayokey chain are located there.
Edward van Vliet developed the concept of interior design for several similar institutions in different cities of the Netherlands. Beginning his career as a designer of fabrics, today he creates furniture for Moroso and lamps for Moooi.
For Stayokay interior, Edward invented single corporate style: simple shapes, natural materials and vibrant colors – red and orange. As the interior space reflects the intricate architecture of the building, decor is extremely laconic. Rooms do not look like each other. They differ in the slope and design of walls, the configuration of lamps. In late May, the European Design Festival was held in Rotterdam: in contrast to other hotels, there was no vacant room for a month before the festival in this hostel.
