Sofas and Couches from Doshi Levien

Two industrial designers Englishman Jonathan Levien and Indian Nipa Doshi were married and established a design bureau under the name “Doshi Levien”. The company is based in London and is engaged in the production of furniture, tableware and kitchen accessories.
Both of the designers complement each other very harmoniously. Creativity of Nipa Doshi pervades the centuries-old Indian culture, while Jonathan Levien brings to the production the European culture.
However, their work celebrates the cultural diversity and explores a synthesis between modern technology, age-old history, industrial design and craftsmanship. Their motto is the phrase: “Globalization and internationalization require the destruction of local cultures … We want to see globalization as a way to connect the manifold and the scrapping of standardization.”
Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi created two new products for the Italian label Moroso called “My Beautiful Backside and Princess”. Like their previous works, these projects represent the fusion of two worlds, India and Europe. Sofas for “My Beautiful Backside” are performed in a gentle color palette. They are decorated with pillows of various shapes. Moreover, the wider the sofa, the more pillows are on them.
Pillows are covered with Indian textiles and decorated with very large, extremely beautiful buttons. A new wool fabric, developed by Giulio Ridolfo for Kvadrat, as well as silk and cotton are used as finishing. It is this combination of materials, according to designers, that reminds us of the old-fashioned clothes with stiff starched collars.
Couches called Principessa is also part of the project, which Doshi & Levien created for Moroso. This beautiful bed in the lower leg consists of several layers of thin mattresses, painted in bright colors gypsy. The name for this furniture was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale about the Princess and the Pea.
Title Principessa is something between a princess (princess) and pea (pea). Princess is going to attend the ball, this is why there are a few things on the couch, as it were scattered in disarray: hair dryer, umbrella, necklace, glass. All this is made of red with gold and silver jacquard fabric.
