Light Plus Color Equals Space
Lighting greatly changes the color. Therefore, before buying any “colorful” element for the future of interior design (textiles, paints, wallpaper, carpets, furniture, etc) a competent designer “experiences” its sample, not only in natural light in the store, but under illumination, which will be installed in apartment.
Otherwise it may easily happen that, say, a beautiful blue carpet, along with carefully selected for it blue ensemble of furniture and accessories in a room with a “warm” light will turn into inconspicuous mouse gray assemblage of items that seemed to numb sleepwalking in a trance, completely forgetting about the original color idea.
There are special colorful table showing how “warm” and “cold” artificial light affects color mutations. For example, a pastel shade of yellow (in daylight) becomes brighter under the “warm” light and very weak, and gray under the “cold”. It is well known that the color of the walls, floor and ceiling can change our perception of room size.
• Dark colors make the room smaller and the ceiling more below. The bright colors give the optical expansion and the room seems more spacious, ceiling “raises”.
• The cold blue tones create an impression of spaciousness. Walls and ceilings are optically relegated.
• Warm colors with a clear presence of red have the opposite effect. They seem to move up to the viewer.
• Warm yellow tones are less aggressive than red ones. Dark shades narrow the room light ones expand it.
• Speaking of the light design of interior you should take into account these effects and for each mode of illumination.
