Dirk Denison Introduces Culver House Project in Chicago
“Green” architectural mimicry of private homes and large-scale urban complexes has long been one of the most topical issues on our website. This time, it will go about trying to “break through” “green” building in Chicago (Illinois, USA). The authors of Culver House project became the architects of the American studio Dirk Denison Architects. The first floor of mixed purposes is given for the commercial functions, and above it (from second to sixth floors), it has eight comfortable residences for life.
The main material of the building is glass.
Culver House is conceived and designed to give future residents a generous and versatile space for living and working as an architectural “vocabulary” of the house, which seeks to define a new style of construction in the area, consists of the dynamics of light and greenery.
As the main revetment material, the project team has chosen high-strength glass, through which fronts adapted to local climatic conditions. Greenery, both inside and outside the building, except for decorative and ecological functions, perform the task of winter gardens and “buffer zones” for the walls of the facade at critical points along its length. And yet, thanks to this “green” solution, the house is talking the same language with the surrounding park, which, moreover, is reflected in the facades of the first floor.
Authors of Culver House tried to create three-dimensional visual landscape intertwining of internal and external spaces, which generates more and favorable psychological environment. In addition, the roof of the building collects rainwater for irrigation of all plants located in the house, all plumbing in which, moreover, has water-saving features. All the above advantages, along with heat-saving and energy efficient technologies, transform a house into the category of small urban eco-system, promoting clean air and improve the microclimate of the city.
