Color Combinations in Garden Design
Every gardener creates his own garden in harmony with his own preferences and taste. But if you want the garden to feast the eyes all year round, you must consider the overall coloring. After all, color combination of plants plays an important role in the design of a garden. And not only harmony of colors of flowering plants, but also of leaves, shoots, grass are of great importance. Some people like contrasting color combinations, the others like more subtle combinations.
For example, green lawn has calming effect on a tired man. Succulent green highlights perfectly the golden, purple or bronze colored foliage of some plants.
Red, orange and yellow flowers create bright and visible “spots” in the garden. Therefore, they are usually planted in the background or near the entrance to the house. Blue, purple and blue flowers are not so noticeable from distance. Plants with transition colors, for example, crimson, pink, lemon, etc., harmoniously and unobtrusively combine with each other, but may merge from afar. Therefore plants in pastel colors are usually planted in the foreground. In order to soften the transition between the contrasting colors with flowers, white will be perfect. It blends well with any color.
Three color tones beautifully combine between each other. We must draw a triangle on top of which there will be three colors, for example, red, blue and yellow. The combination of shades that come one after another, will look more harmonious. Excessive heterogeneity may affect the integrity of the garden.
If you like the diversity of forest glade, you may boldly plant different herbs and flowers in your garden. The only thing that should be considered is that fast-growing plants can drown the plants, which grow more slowly. Therefore, they should be planted at some distance from each other. It is more difficult to harmoniously combine flowers together, when they are of different colors. Therefore, two or three well-chosen colors will look more advantageous than a conglomeration of different colors. If you want your garden to please you with its multicolor from early spring until late autumn, choose the plants, flowering of which are in different periods.
Color of plant leaves also play role in the overall coloring of the garden. They can vary from silver to brown-red. If you competently approach to the creation of flowerbeds, it will please you both before and after flowering.
