Proper size and kind of tree stand. The tree stand needs to be capable of holding enough water to keep the cut base of the tree under water at all times. The usual recommendation is that it holds 1 gallon of water. Use a tree stand that is the right size for the trunk of the tree. Don’t cut the tree girth to fit a smaller stand.

Place base of tree in water as soon as possible. If the tree won’t be put in the stand right away it can be placed in a bucket of water and kept in a cool place until it is set in the stand.
