Basic Rules for Handling Color
Although it seems that the basic rules are known for everybody, known doesn’t mean applied. When making your own interior, wanting to express your individuality, this primer is often overlooked.
• If the windows of the room look to the south, the design should be in saturated or dark tones, the northern room is better to be in light colors.
• The darker the ceiling, the lower it seems; vertical stripes on the walls will visually make the ceiling higher.
• A darker wall seems more distant, and vice versa.
• Dark-colored walls reduce the room, the light colors expand.
• Red stimulates, the short-term effect of red increases efficiency and the prolonged exposure leads to fatigue and reduces efficiency.
• Orange creates a cheerful and upbeat mood, a sensation of heat.
• Yellow is active, animating, energizing, helps to create a good mood
• Green is neutral, soft, soothing. Long-term effect of this color is not fatiguing, increases efficiency
• Blue and deep-blue colors are passive, promote relaxation and slowing of life processes, decrease in activity and emotional stress. The blue color disposes to contemplation and reflection.
• Purple is the most passive color. It evokes a feeling of depression and anxiety, even short-term effect of purple greatly reduces efficiency.
• Brown is quiet and reserved, helps to create a relaxing mood.
• Black is associated with night and darkness, it dramatically reduces the mood, and gray creates apathy and boredom.
• White color gives the impression of modesty and simplicity, but the emotional mood is heavily dependent on the light and warmth of tone. Any other color looks advantageous in its background.
• The more colors, the smaller should be its saturation, bright saturated colors cause eyestrain, which leads to excessive excitation and fatigue.
• In the room where the main tone is subdued and quiet, you can use the basic rule of ikebana; one or two bright spots of color will create the necessary mood. Those can be pillows, ottomans or bouquet of flowers.
