7 of the rules of design and arrangement of dark rooms
Every room in the apartment or house, except bathrooms and dressing rooms, has at least one window. Insolation is one of the key factors of apartment micro-climate and ensures not only the beauty, but is done to also meet the requirements of sanitary norms.
But as a result of re-planning and zoning of space a room without windows may exist in the building. Without daylight, these rooms require a special approach when it comes to interior and decoration. Here are 7 basic rules of decorating dark rooms.
Rule 1: set achievable goals
If there is a room in your apartment where there is no natural light, it is best to place an utility room in which you don’t spend much time. For example, you can place a large bathroom, dressing room and laundry room, says a designer.
But if you had other plans for the space, albeit without windows, you can still use the room to better advantage. It may be convenient to arrange a library, boudoir or an office, a bedroom or a guest room.
Rule 2: Make openings and use stained glass
Make the room comfortable for stay – make a window opening in the area of the apartment, where daylight enters.
The opening can be done at the top of the wall or from floor to the ceiling. To do this use stained glass or glass blocks: they reflect light, but offer intimacy to the rooms.
Rule 3: Transparent partitions
The best option of lighting in this space are sliding glass partition. They provide light to the room without windows, separate the space, but combine it when needed. Such a solution is especially convenient for small apartments.
Rule 4: Choosing the right lighting
According to specialists, it is not recommended to use daylight lamps for lighting of rooms without natural light. The reason for that is they emit too harsh on the eyes, does not add comfort to the home environment.
Rule 5: Lighting Zones
If there is not enough light it is better to organize multiple lighting sources: primary, secondary, and ornamental. Chandelier on the ceiling, wall to wall and floor lamps – with this set, even in the dark room it will be comfortable and cozy.
Rule 6: Light walls and bright accents
For background wall decoration and furnishing of rooms without windows, designers advise using white and light shades of ivory and cream.
Bright colors are appropriate for textiles and accessories. Yellow, olive, blue and turquoise colors are the best – they will fill the space with freshness and energy.
Rule 7: hang mirrors
To visually expand the space use mirrors. The room will look larger if one of the walls or the ceiling is decorated with a mirror facet.
